Cher BiographyQualified as the most stable entertainers of her time, Cher, born on May 20, 1946 was a not so rich, fatherless child whose mother married eight times and struggled by infrequent singing performances. Cher was 16 years in age when she dropped out of high-school and abandoned home to take acting lessons in Los Angeles. This was a plan that could not run smoothly for too long, the reason being Cher's encounter with 28-year-old producer-songwriter Sonny Bono at Aldo's Coffee Shop in 1963. "It was as if the whole room went to soft focus, like Tony and Maria at the dance," Cher has disclosed often of their chance meeting.It seemed as if destiny took a turn for young Cher, when the two became friends and in due course started living together, irrespective of the 11-year age difference between them. The pair graduated from the level of being friends to the level of being lovers; by the time they gave their hit, "I Got You, Babe".The song became an anthem for hippie lovebirds all around. Prior to making it huge with "I Got You, Babe", Sonny and Cher performed at various places including bowling alleys, under the name Caesar and Cleo. Cher's solo recordings under the name Bonnie Jo Mason and Cherilyn were also dejected attempts, and Sonny and Cher only saw fame when they sang the 1965 Bono-written love song. The duo was known equaly for their flashy attire as for their hits. It was the wide colorful pants, skimpy tops, shaggy hair, and fur vests - that wowed fans. They had one more hit in 1967, "The Beat Goes On".Next it was the ever daring; Bono who launched Cher in films, at the cost of his own cash when all the money from studio financing was lost .But the fame that the two experienced with singing could not come with acting.Their movies, Good Times and Chastity, went unnoticed. The duo lost the wealth they earned as pop stars. With a view to come out of debt, and support daughter Chastity born in 1969, they made a move towards the lounge circuit. And this kind of an appearance was quite degrading after their perfarmances in fully loaded arenas. After bearing the burnt in the movie world the two found no escape. But CBS came as the knight in the shining armour , and gave Sonny and Cher an oppurtunity that they could not afford to miss.It came in shape of a one-hour television variety show, The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour (1971).This show once again brought the couple back into the limelight, exhibiting the same chemistry that had once pulled the enormous crowd.For another time Cher returned to the pop charts, but this time success brought a breakup in the married life of the two (1974). And with the crack in the marriage , there came an end of the show.Cher married for a second time and with her second husband, Gregg Allman of the Allman Brothers, Cher retuned to television and started out as own variety series, that eventually became The Sonny and Cher Show. After completing two seasons in August '77, the show got off air, for fair reasons. For further some time after, two of them kept giving performances in concert .While all this was taking place Cher had to bear Allman being addicted to booze and heroin. She was trying hard to retrieve their off-and-on union. They recorded a heart-touching album, Allman and Woman: Two The Hard Way, but it was a tough to sell it to the reducing fan following. Once again in 1976 her wedding was on the rocks, and at this juncture Cher was an jobless 33-year-old single mother, longing for the unworkable: A shot in serious films. But her camp TV image and shocking troubles were so ingrained; made it impossiblefor anyone in Hollywood to visualize it.Cher's career chart as an honoured actress took off after her performance in , Come Back to the 5 & Dime Jimmy Dean Jimmy Dean.This gave her a platform to land with a role opposite Hollywood A-list actress Meryl Streep in Silkwood. With a Oscar winning performance in this movie Cher gave a series of good performances in Mask, The Witches of Eastwick, Suspect, and Moonstruck. With hit singles like "If I Could Turn Back Time" and "Heart of Stone", and a role in Mermaids co-starring Winona Ryder, Cher had reached a point of collapse. She took a turn towards Informercials and fitness videos due to her unending weariness .and this move on her part placed a stigma on her blooming career. One more time, in 1998 this big screen favourite made a successful comeback,with a soaring hit album named Believe.this was a remarkable comeback on the part of this sensation after going through the trauma of the tragic death of a long time friend and ex- husband , Sonny Bono.this album of Cher, once again proved that Cher is a iron-willed, self-regulating woman with infinite determination.Cher pounced backon the big-screen with her role in the all female film, Tea With Mussolini. This can be regarded as her second innings.Cher is an active worker for causes such as AIDS, gay rights and the Children's Craniofacial Association. With her role in in the HBO drama If These Walls Could Talk, Cher has also added producer to her profile. One has not seen any actor of Cher's caliber, who is determined, strong willed and fascinating to a great extent.
