Christina Aguilera BiographyChristina Aguilera was born on December 18, 1980 in Staten Island, New York, USA. Her father, Fausto, was an Ecuadorian and her mother, Shelly, was Irish. By the time Christina was five, she knew all the songs from The Sound of Music and performed them at neighborhood block parties. It wasn't long before Christina Aguilera was performing the National Anthem at professional sporting events in the area.Since her father was in the military she moved around quite a bit in the initial years. Her parents separated when she was seven, and thereafter she settled with her sister and mom in Wexford, Pensylvania. Her mother was a professional pianist. At the age of eight Christina appeared on the nationally syndicated show Star Search and at the age of ten she sang the National Anthem for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Penguins. By the time Christina was twelve years old, she had become a member of the television show the New Mickey Mouse Club, the cast of which included Britney Spears, Keri Russell, and J.C. Chasez and Justin Timberlake from the boy band *N Sync. In 1998, Christina traveled to Japan where she recorded a duet with Japanese star Keizo Nakanishi. She also performed at the Golden Stag Festival in Transylvania, Romania, along with Sheryl Crow and Diana Ross. And it was here that Christina caught the eye of manager Steve Kurtz, who requested a demo tape. Amazed by her voice and beauty, he offered her a record deal when she was 15. She got the offer to sing Reflection for the animated film Mulan and the song was eventually nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Original Song in a Motion Picture. Her first album, Christina Aguilera, spawned the hits Genie in a Bottle, Come on Over and What a Girl Wants. She also had a hit with P!nk, Courtesy of BMG Mya and Lil Kim, with the Moulin Rouge song, Lady Marmalade. The catchy tune “Dirrty” off her latest album, Stripped, is also scoring tons of air play. In the two years from the day that she burst onto the world musical landscape, Christina Aguilera has scored four #1 smash hit singles, watched sales of her chart-topping RCA debut album surpass the 12 million mark worldwide (23 million CDs and singles total sold to date), headlined the Super Bowl Half-Time Show, performed for the President, and to top it all off, took home two Grammys including one for Best New Artist. Christina Aguilera continues to provide evidence that she is the premier musical voice of her generation. To Build Children’s ShelterChristina Aguilera's Christina Aguilera Foundation, which she formed earlier this year, is now planning to build and support a shelter for children in the singer's hometown of Pittsburgh. The shelter will be funded partially by a new BMG Visa card being launched by BMG Entertainment and Capital One.(10/04/00) |
