Drew Barrymore BiographyDrew Blythe Barrymore was born on February 22, 1975 in Culver City, California into a family that was deeply associated with the world of acting and films. Her father is actor John Drew Barrymore Jr. and her mother is actress Ildiko Jad Barrymore. She is the goddaughter of Steven Spielberg and Anna Strasberg.Drew began her acting career at the tender age of 11 months, when her mother began taking her to TV auditions. An actress was born when Drew starred in her first television appearance--a commercial for Gainesburger Puppy Food. Over the next several years, Drew grew into a charming and imaginative child. Her smile was dazzling and her personality catching. Drew auditioned for Spielberg’s “Poltergiest” at the age of six, but Spielberg felt that the role was not for her. Instead, he handed her the role of sweet kid sister Gertie in the runaway success E.T.: The Extra Terrestrial. This role brought wide recognition to Drew and also won her the Young Artist Award for Best Young Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture. She also became the youngest-ever host for the NBC hit, The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, when she appeared on the show in November 1982. All this stardom and being in the spotlight turned out to be rather stressful for the young Drew. The world rested on Drew's shoulders, and eventually it all became too much to bear. At the young age of 9, Drew became the victim of drugs and alcohol abuse. Despite all this, Drew went on to star in three more films. Although the films brought much fame to her, they also added to her problems by making her the center of so much attraction. By the age of thirteen, Drew hit rock bottom and was out of control. On June 28, 1988 Drew was checked into ASAP Family Treatment Center by her mother. This turned out to be a life-changing decision and after years of self-destruction, Drew was finally on the road to recovery. The journey was not a smooth one. Not only did she have to recover from her drug abuse, but she also had to rebuild her professional career. All this led her to publishing her autobiography entitled Little Girl Lost, when she was 14 years of age. With the passage of time she finally found herself back on the big-screen. In 1998, Drew set up her own production company Flower Films and produced the block-busters Never Been Kissed (1999), Charlie’s Angels(2000) and its sequel Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle (2003). The latter two netted her a Blockbuster Entertainment Award and Kids' Choice Award. On July 3, 2004 Drew Barrymore received a star on Hollywood Boulevard’s Walk of Fame. Drew has accomplished a lot at such a young age and is a role model for many. She is one of the very few actresses with the rare capacity to act well in dramatic and comical parts. She is a star that will always shine brightly on the skies of the film world. "I try to make movies that I would want to go see rather than ones I would just want to do as an actor. I want people to have movies full of romance and hope and empowerment, something they can escape into and feel good about. I love happy endings." - Drew Barrymore "I believe in fate.
