Marilyn MonroeThe most celebrated of all actresses; Marilyn Monroe was born on June 1, 1926, in Los Angeles General Hospital as Norma Jean Mortenson. Before her birth, Marilyn's father abandoned the family in Los Angeles. Her father identity is still unknown to her. Her mother, Gladys, several relationships, added to her confusion regarding who her father was. What remained for lifetime with Gladys and her daughter was Poverty. Gladys, who worked for RKO Studios as a film cutter and was extremely attractive, suffered from mental illness and that was the reason why Norma Jean had to spend time in foster homes. Having stayed in an orphanage during her childhood, she went to yet another foster home. In 1942, Norma Jean, 16years young got married to James Dougherty, a 21-year-old aircraft plant worker. The marriage didn't last long and they divorced in 1946. It was the time when Marilyn bleached her hair blonde and began to model swimsuits. She began to establish herself before public eyes. She was offered a screen test by RKO Pictures head Howard Hughes. But 20th Century-Fox would be the better option for her, since it was a much bigger and more prestigious studio. Then she signed a contract for a six-month period at $125 per week but soon that will be increased by $25 per week at the end of that time when her contract was lengthened. Her first film was "The Shocking Miss Pilgrim (1947)"was not a big hit. Her next production Scudda Hoo! Scudda Hay! (1948) sailed in the same boat. Later that same year she got a somewhat better role in Dangerous Years (1947) as Evie. However, when her hopes for renewal of her contract were not fulfilled, she went back to modeling and acting school. She sang two numbers in Ladies of the Chorus (1948), where she played Peggy Martin. It was in 1949, she appeared in United Artists' Love Happy (1949). That same year she decided to pose nude for the now famous calendar shot which appeared later in Playboy magazine in 1953 and further boost her career. The year 1950 can be labeled as "Marilyn's year" as in that year she appeared in five films. The awesome news was that for The Asphalt Jungle (1950) from MGM and All About Eve (1950) from Fox, she received very good notices for her roles in two of them. In 1951, Marilyn got a fairly sizable role in Love Nest (1951). She had a thrilling quality of wrapping her volcanic sexuality in the guise of almost childlike innocence. In 1952, Marilyn appeared in Don't Bother to Knock (1952), in which she acted as a somewhat mentally unbalanced babysitter. The next year she appeared in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953) as Lorelei Lee. She began dating the baseball great Joe DiMaggio, the same year. Marilyn announced her divorce from DiMaggio by the end of October 1954. The union lasted only eight months. In 1955 she was suspended by Fox for not reporting for work on How to Be Very, Very Popular (1955). In Bus Stop (1956), however, Marilyn finally explained critics that she could play a straight dramatic role. The same year she married playwright, Arthur Miller (they divorced in 1960). In 1960 Marilyn appeared in George Cukor's Let's Make Love (1960), with Tony Randall and Yves Montand. The Misfits (1961), was the final film, for the legendary Clark Gable, who died later that year of a heart attack. The film was admired by critics and the public alike. In 1962 Marilyn was preferred to star in Fox's Something's Got to Give (1962). Again, her absence caused delay after delay in production. This resulted in her being ablaze from the production in June of that year. She was found dead, nude and lying face down on her bed, on August 5, 1962, seems to be the victim of an overdose of sedatives. She was only 36. Marilyn or a magnetShe was "discovered" by press photographers during a WWII photo shoot at the Radioplane plant in California (a manufacturer of military drone targets), owned by actor Reginald Denny. She was one of the plant's employees, and her attractive looks and natural charm made her a "magnet" for the photographers. |

In 1962, when she died at age 36, she left an estate valued at $1.6 million. In her will, Monroe bequeathed 75% of that estate to Lee Strasberg, her acting coach, and 25% to Dr. Marianne Kris, her psychoanalyst. A trust fund provided her mother, Gladys Baker Eley, with $5,000 a year. When Dr. Kris died in 1980, she passed her 25% on to the Anna Freud Centre, a children's psychiatric institute in London.
