Paula AbdulPaula Abdul is a parallel talent of singing and choreographing who serves as a judge on the television talent show American Idol. She was born and brought up in southern California. In early 1980s she got her first break as a cheerleader for the Los Angeles Lakers. Her talent of choreographing led to a job as assistant dance director for the Jacksons, and this again was a catalyst for another job --choreographing videos for Janet Jackson's album Control. Around 1990 she worked as a choreographer for television and film. This time she had a no of hit songs in her credit. Her debut album, 1988's Forever Your Girl, produced four top hits, including "Straight Up." Her second record, Spellbound also did well, but her third, Head Over Heels (1995) was less successful. Around this time the singer’s personal life was running in topsy-turvy. She divorced her actor husband Emilio Estevez, recovered from an eating disorder and successfully fought off a lawsuit by a backup singer who claimed to be the main singer of several tracks on Forever Your Girl. Again in late ‘90s Abdul was back to her won profession. Since 2002 she has been serving as a judge on American Idol. It is said that during her current tenure in Indian Idol, she has a bitter relationship with her fellow judge Simon Cowell. In 1989, Abdul won Emmys award for her choreography for The Tracey Ullman Show and The American Music Awards (1990).Her Savvy ProducersAbdul's singles were hits not because her singing was exceptional -- her voice is thin and transparent -- but because she worked with savvy producers who had a knack for picking songs with solid pop and dance hooks. Abdul's spectacular big-budget videos helped push the sales of Forever Your Girl past seven million in the U.S. alone. While her second album, 1991's Spellbound, wasn't as successful, it still sold over three million copies and spent two weeks at number one. |
