Whitney HoustonWhitney is a singer, an actress and a philanthropist. Born on August 9, 1963 in a family that had two great singers and Grammy award winners it seems that it was Whitney's destiny to be a singer as well. Whitney had begun singing at a very early age and had started to give solo performances by the time she was 11 years old. As a teenager, she began accompanying her mother in concerts (as well as on the 1978 album Think It Over), and went on to back artists like Lou Rawls and Chaka Khan.Houston's first hit was You Give Good Love, which topped the R&B charts and hit number three pop. Her debut album Whitney Houston hit number one on the album charts. It eventually sold over 13-million copies, making it the best-selling debut ever by a female artist. Whitney has also proven her talent as an actress as well: The Bodyguard featuring Whitney in her first motion picture role, co-starring with Oscar-winning actor-director Kevin Costner, broke box office records worldwide. Houston is a sort of social activist too. In 1989, Whitney formed The Whitney Houston Foundation For Children, Inc., a non-profit organization, whose work is to assist with a variety of children's issues.
